Cryotherapy for suitable skin lesions
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy selected superficial benign skin lesions.
The treatment usually takes only a few seconds. You may experience brief stinging or burning during the procedure. Afterwards, the area may become red, swollen or blistered before forming a crust or scab.
Cryotherapy is not suitable for every mole and is not used to treat cysts or lipomas. It is generally reserved for appropriate superficial lesions where tissue does not need to be preserved for histology.
Surgical mole removal
Suitable moles can be removed through elliptical surgical excision under local anaesthetic.
Once the area is numb, the mole is removed in one piece through a carefully planned incision. The wound is then closed with stitches and covered with a dressing.
You should not feel sharp pain during the procedure, although you may notice pressure or movement. The resulting scar will usually be longer than the original width of the mole, allowing the skin to be closed neatly without puckering.
Cyst removal
A skin cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin, fluid or other material. Cysts can remain stable for years or become swollen, painful, infected or repeatedly inflamed.
During cyst removal, a small incision is made under local anaesthetic. The contents and, where possible, the cyst wall or capsule are removed. Removing the capsule helps reduce the risk of the cyst returning.
If a cyst is acutely infected or severely inflamed, it may not be appropriate to remove it immediately. The inflammation may need to settle before definitive treatment is arranged.
Lipoma removal
A lipoma is a soft, usually harmless lump made of fatty tissue beneath the skin.
Suitable lipomas can be removed through a small incision under local anaesthetic. Dr Sana will carefully separate the lipoma from the surrounding tissue, remove it and close the wound with stitches.
Larger, deeper, rapidly growing or unusually firm lumps may require imaging or specialist assessment before removal.
Histology is offered as standard
Every mole, cyst or lipoma removed surgically at The Sana Clinic is offered for histological examination as standard.
The tissue is sent to a specialist laboratory and examined under a microscope. This can confirm the diagnosis and identify whether any further assessment or treatment is required.
Once the report is available, it will be reviewed and the result communicated to you.
Histology cannot be performed after cryotherapy because the treated tissue is destroyed during freezing.
